Anime Food in Real Life ~Grave of the Fireflies~

Welcome back to the series of anime food in real life. Today’s post I wanted to introduce another Ghilbi film, however it is something you can buy rather than cook! We will talk about Sakuma Drops where this candy was found in the movie, “Grave of the Fireflies.”

While I was shopping at a mall, I found a snack store that sold very cheap snacks called 駄菓子/Dagashi. You can find snacks that are 10yen to 100yen cheap. I felt nostalgia because I used to eat all these different types of snacks when I was very young. Anyways, I came across this fruit flavored canned candy where I recognized it in the “Grave of the Fireflies.” Did anybody watch that movie and just cry for days. Ok maybe not literally days, but that movie hit hard. Back to the canned candy, it is iconic because it showed up in multiple scenes in the movie. They are called Sakuma-shiki Drops where it was Setsuko’s, the young girl, favorite candy. When I found the Drops at the store I immediately added that to my basket and wanted to try them.

Was excited to write or film about this, but there was a mistake I made. The mistake I have made is that the one I bought is not identical to the movie. The one I bought is Sakuma Drops with a green cover, however when I did a little research there is a red cover called Sakuma-shiki Drops which is the identical one in the movie. Even though the name may be similar they are two different companies selling them. I thought I had the one identical to the movie, but I was wrong.

And so, if you would like to try Setsuko’s candies I would recommend buying the red covered canned candy rather than the green one. The red one have sugar coats on them which makes it more sweet! Also the difference between those two are the flavors. If you don’t mind the differentiation then try the green one! I also made a short video on byte about it here. Would you try Sakuma or Sakuma-shiki, or even better both drops? If so let me know what you think about it.

All in all, these drops are Amai (Sweet) and Kawaii (Cute)♡
